Same plan name, different prices? Understanding HMO plan versions

If you have compared plans on Yousure, you may have seen the same plan name more than once, with prices that are far apart. It is not a mistake. HMOs sell the same plan in several versions, and until now it was hard to tell which was which.

Every plan on Yousure now carries a label showing its version, on the compare page, in the one-page PDF and in the emails you send. This guide explains what those labels mean.

What the labels mean

Individual or Family

Individual covers the employee only. Family also covers dependants, usually a spouse and a set number of children. Because more people are covered, a Family version costs much more per employee.

SME or Corporate

HMOs price group plans by the size of the group. Smaller teams are usually priced as SME, and larger teams as Corporate. Each HMO sets its own cut-off, so the same team might be SME with one HMO and Corporate with another. Your headcount decides which version applies.

A real example

Here is one plan from our live data, in three versions. The biggest differences are who is covered and how the group is priced, and the detailed list of benefits can differ between versions too.

VersionCoversAnnual premium per employee
Family · CorporateEmployee and dependants₦1,270,620
Individual · CorporateEmployee only₦211,770
Individual · SMEEmployee only₦218,500

Without the labels, these look like three copies of the same plan at wildly different prices. With them, the first question is clear: are you covering families or not? Then compare the versions that match your answer side by side, because the detailed benefits can differ.

How to pick the right version

  1. Decide on dependants first. This is the biggest driver of cost. Our guide on whether to cover employees' families can help.
  2. Enter your exact headcount. It decides whether you are priced as SME or Corporate, so a range can show you the wrong version.
  3. Compare like with like. When you put plans side by side, make sure they are the same version, for example all "Individual", so the prices are comparable.

Action plan

Choose the right version

  1. 1

    Settle the dependants question

Decide whether you are covering employees only or their families too.

  2. 2

    Use your exact headcount

Type the real number on the team profile, not a range.

  3. 3

    Compare the same version

On the compare page, check each plan's label so you are comparing like with like.
