Should you cover your employees' families?

Covering spouses and children costs more, but it is one of the benefits staff value most. How dependant cover works and how to decide.

Ask your staff what worries them most about health, and many will not talk about themselves. They will talk about their children, their spouse, or an ageing parent. That is why dependant cover is one of the most valued benefits you can offer.

How dependant cover works

The employee is called the principal. The family members on their plan are dependants. A common setup covers the principal, a spouse and a set number of children up to a certain age. Some plans also allow you to add parents or extra children for an additional premium.

The three common approaches

ApproachHow it worksGood for
Company pays for allCompany covers staff and dependantsFirms competing hard for talent
Split the costCompany pays for staff; dependants sharedBalancing cost and value
Staff pay for familyCompany covers staff; staff pay for family by payrollTight budgets, still offering access

Even when staff pay for their own family members, a group plan often gives them a better price and better hospitals than they could get alone. That is a real benefit in itself.

What it does for your company

  • Fewer days off. When a child is sick and has no cover, a parent often stays home or asks for a salary advance.
  • Staff stay longer. Family cover is hard to give up. It is a strong reason to stay.
  • It is fair to everyone. Clear rules on who is covered avoid awkward one-off requests to HR.

Setting the rules

  • Decide which family members qualify, and write it down.
  • Set a deadline for adding dependants each year, and explain what happens for new babies or marriages mid-year.
  • Ask for simple documents, like a birth or marriage certificate, and keep them private.

Action plan

Your dependant cover action plan

  1. 1

    Count potential dependants

Ask staff (privately) how many spouses and children they would add.

  2. 2

    Choose an approach

Company pays all, split the cost, or staff pay through payroll.

  3. 3

    Compare prices with dependants

Select "Employee + Dependants" on Yousure to see real prices.

  4. 4

    Write clear rules

Who qualifies, age limits, and how to add a new baby or spouse.

  5. 5

    Announce it well

Family cover is a big benefit. Make sure every employee knows about it.
