Mental health at work: what your health plan can (and cannot) do

Stress and burnout are real costs for Nigerian companies. What mental health cover looks like on HMO plans and how to support your team beyond it.

Long commutes, rising costs and heavy workloads take a toll. Many people carry stress quietly until it shows up as missed deadlines, sick days or resignations. More companies now see mental health as part of health cover, not something separate.

What HMO plans usually offer

Mental health cover varies a lot between plans. You might see:

  • Nothing at all on some basic plans. Mental health is often in the exclusions list.
  • Consultations with a psychiatrist after referral, sometimes with a limit on the number of sessions.
  • Counselling or therapy sessions, on higher tiers or as an add-on.
  • Telehealth or helplines for quick, private support.

Privacy matters most

Staff will only use mental health support if they trust it is private. Make clear that the company does not see who uses the service or why. The HMO should only share anonymous usage numbers.

What you can do beyond the plan

  • Talk about it openly. When leaders mention mental health, others feel safe to ask for help.
  • Train managers to notice signs of stress and have kind, simple conversations.
  • Look at workloads. No benefit can fix a team that is always overworked.
  • Respect time off. Discourage messages late at night and on weekends.
