Health cover for teams spread across different states

Staff in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and working remotely? How to make sure everyone gets the same quality of care, wherever they are.

More Nigerian companies now have teams in several cities, plus people working from home in places far from any office. A plan that works well in Lagos may be weak in Enugu or Kano. Here is how to make sure no one is left with poor access.

Start with a map of your team

List how many staff are in each state and city, including remote workers. This tells you where hospital coverage matters most.

Check coverage in every location

  • Ask each HMO for their hospital list by state for the plan tier you want.
  • Look for good hospitals in every city where you have staff, not only the head office.
  • For remote staff in smaller towns, check the nearest hospitals on the list and how far they are.
  • Ask about telemedicine. Being able to speak to a doctor by phone or video helps staff far from a good hospital.

Staff who travel for work

Sales teams, field engineers and managers who travel need to know what to do if they fall sick away from home. Ask the HMO how emergency care works in another state, and whether staff can temporarily use a hospital there.

Keep communication simple

  • Share one guide that works for everyone, with a section for each location.
  • Give remote staff a named contact in HR.
  • Check in with each location after the first month to catch any problems.

Action plan

Your multi-location action plan

  1. 1

    Map your team by state

Count staff in each city, including remote workers.

  2. 2

    Check hospitals in each place

Ask for state-by-state hospital lists for your chosen tier.

  3. 3

    Ask about telemedicine

Especially important for staff far from major cities.

  4. 4

    Plan for travelling staff

Confirm how emergency care works outside their home state.

  5. 5

    Check in after 30 days

Ask each location how access is working in practice.
